Jillian Glasgow has been named Recruitment and Administrative Assistant for L’Arche USA, which has nineteen communities across the country where people with and without intellectual disabilities live and work together as peers.
Her role focuses on two critical operational areas: 1) recruitment and screening of live-in assistants to provide daily support for adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities in for L’Arche communities across the country and 2) administrative support for daily office operations, including donor and financial record keeping.
At the heart of L’Arche are adults who have intellectual disabilities—known as “core members”—and the relationships that arise from a shared life. Jillian first encountered this shared life more than ten years ago. Originally from Boise, Idaho, she came to Tacoma, Washington, as a Jesuit Volunteer and was introduced to L’Arche Tahoma Hope through community celebrations and gatherings. Since relocating to Portland she developed friendships members of the local community.
“In all of my exposure to L’Arche, the thing that I’ve come to value the most is the way that each community celebrates,” Jillian said. “Each holiday, anniversary, or other occasion is met with both deep joy and reflection.”
Since completing her undergraduate degree in business administration from Carroll College in Helena, Montana, in 2005, Jillian has held a variety of roles in the nonprofit sector. She has worked with adults who have intellectual disabilities, managed a day center for homeless adults, served as area director for Jesuit Volunteer Corps Northwest, and coordinated volunteers and communications for a demonstration garden. In addition to her new part-time role with L’Arche USA, Jillian is also the owner and operator of Groundswell Farm where she works to sustainably grow baby salad greens for local restaurants.
“I hope to become part of the support network to broaden and deepen L’Arche’s impact in the community,” she said.
L’Arche USA accepts assistant applications from adults of all ages and backgrounds on a rolling basis. Find out more about becoming an assistant and send your application to Jillian at firstname.lastname@example.org.
